Abstract | In discourses of German educational studies and politics the concept of "Bildung" has been omnipresent since its theorization by Wilhelm von Humboldt. Whereas the term turns out to be a catch-all-concept for almost everything related to education in everyday speech, in the academic domain - in spite of the various changes that it has undergone in the course of time - it is quite well defined. This article tries to briefly point out the main characteristics of "Bildung" and uses them as criteria to describe and analyse the developments in German foreign language education during the past four decades, giving answers to the question to what degree and in which way postulates and practices in this field were inspired by the idea of "Bildung".
