AbstractGrammar books are written to be used: in their explanations of grammatical issues, the authors try to anticipate the users' needs and expectations. On the other hand, users often expect grammar books to provide one correct answer, whereas professional authors of grammar books (= linguists) tend to take a descriptive perspective on grammatical variation. The descriptive view on grammatical variation leads to restrictions of the truth claim of explanations: if a linguist considers variations of a rule possible, he cannot claim that the given rule is unrestrictedly true. In grammar books that are written for a broader audience (such as the German DUDEN grammar) the authors nevertheless tend to give rules because they know that rules are expected by the users. But how can we give a rule if we know that variation is possible? The authors of the DUDEN-grammar tend to weaken their rules by using variational expressions. Variational expressions are expressions relating either to diasystematic variation (in standard/written/ special language, expression x is colloquial...) or to diachronic variation (nowadays, expression x tends not to be used any more...), furthermore, frequency expressions (sometimes, more often...) can be considered as variational expressions as well. By using variational expressions the authors try to overcome the gap between their descriptive interests and the users' needs for rules. The contribution raises the question whether this strategy is successful because the usage of variational expressions in the DUDEN-grammar neither follows clearly distinguishable principles nor do we know how the users make use of the variational expressions.
