Abstract | Tihamér Margitay, Professor of Philosophy in Budapest and a widely known scholar of Polanyian philosophy, has assembled 13 essays on the philosophy of Michael Polanyi. They originate from a conference in 2008, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Personal Knowledge, Polanyi's magnum opus. This review is divided into four parts. In order to ensure common ground among readers, [it starts] with very brief remarks on the philosophy of Michael Polanyi. Secondly, [it outlines] peculiarities of Polanyi's work to be considered when examining Knowing and Being. Building on this background, [the author discusses] the approach and scope of the book. Finally [the author concludes] by analysing how Knowing and Being may contribute to a better understanding of Polanyian philosophy, and may serve to bring recognition to Polanyi's noteworthy contribution to ongoing philosophical discussions.
