Structuring algebraic expressions is an individual process in which a person sets different parts of the expression in relation to each other. A description of these relations shows two things: one, into which parts the individual sorted the algebraic expression and how he or she interprets them, and two, in which way the individual uses these relations. Studying these relations therefore allows a reconstruction of the personal meaning which an individual ascribes to the algebraic expressions. In this article, this conception is used to analyse interviews in which individuals analysed algebraic expressions. Four types of relations were identified: Producing relations within an algebraic expression can mean to simplify it visually, to change it, to re-interpret parts of it or to classify the expression. These insights are important for the teaching of algebra, particularly for meaning negotiation within individual structures. |
