Abstract | The expertise of older persons should be seen as an Opportunity for society. The potentials of age in various periods of life and situations is here sketched, both as professional knowledge gained from experience and as "life's expertise." After a presentation of three different models of development and promotion of the expertise of older persons currently being discussed, the didactic concept of "self-determined learning" and "self-organized action" is presented: this very promising concept based on the appreciation of the wisdom of age nevertheless reveals a number of "weak points." Thus here, as in the education of older persons generally, seniors who live in isolation and very aged persons are excluded at a rather critical time of life. Central changes are necessary, both on the individual level and in regard to an alteration of the self-concept of those offering professional services and in the social images of age. (DIPF/Orig.). |
