Abstract | "Latin America and the Caribbean are characterized by great inequality in the distribution of material and symbolic goods and by having highly stratified societies. Making fairer and cohesive societies requires progress towards fairer education systems which guarantee quality education for everyone, and towards more inclusive schools which educate students from different social, cultural and life situations.This article begins with a brief section on inclusive education as a framework for analyzing the situation in Latin America and the Caribbean. Then it describes some factors that generate exclusion and marginalization in education and it raises some challenges or changes which are necessary to take the leap from inclusion in school to inclusion in learning." This article was published in 2011 in a special issue on inclusion, with focus on Spain: "Educación inclusiva: todos iguales, todos diferentes".
