Abstract	"At the beginning of the 21st century we are experiencing social, environmental, cultural, and technological change at an unprecedented pace. The conference 'Our Common Future' which took place in Hanover and Essen in November 2010 provided a platform for leading intellectuals, researchers, businesspeople, and politicians as well as young scholars and scientists to enter into a dialogue on identifying major challenges posed by this fundamental change, presenting different perspectives on global issues, and suggesting solutions for the way ahead. This volume collects some of the papers presented during this session held in Essen. It is aimed at a wider public, enabling the reader to understand migration dynamics against the background of social, economic, cultural, and politic transnationalization and the increasing diversity of societies in countries and regions of immigration. With its varying patterns, conditions, and impacts migration is of increasing relevance throughout the world. The session on 'Global Tensions and Local Responses' was centered around three major issues, which also give shape to the structure of this bock: rural-to-urban migration to megacites and megaslums; the migration-networks development nexus; and migration of highly qualified individuals."
