| Abstract | The British certainly are known for their 'euroscepticism' and their reluctance to feel positive about their membership in the European Union. As opinion polls have shown, for instance, the reactions to the Lisbon treaty in 2009 signed by the former Labour government were generally negative. Many Britons felt that there should have been a referendum on the Lisbon treaty. Without this referendum the scepticism towards the European Union has increased - once again - and Britain's membership in the European Union is called into question by a considerable number of Britons. In the context of the history of British governments' attitudes towards the European Union it is surely interesting to present the current political parties' attitudes towards the European Union as reflected in their political manifestos and also to have a look at the Cameron government's course of dealing with the European Union.
