| Abstract | The article begins by addressing some aspects of the relations between languages taught in the school context, for instance, complementarity and competition. The perspective is historical, focussing on the 19th and 20th centuries. The examples chosen, in particular those from France and Sweden, highlight the different types of contacts and developments which show a tendency towards a progressive compartmentalisation affecting each of the different foreign languages in the curriculum as well as their links with the main language used in schooling. Subsequently, the paper outlines the present European scene, concentrating on the tools produced by the "Council of Europe" to promote societal multilingualism and individual plurilingualism. This may herald a new period where a more global and integrated conception of language education will slowly occur, producing modes and formats of implementation that differ from those employed at present.
