| Abstract | In the last decades foreign language learning has neglected content for various reasons. One of them is the concentration on learning strategies. Yet successful foreign language learning and intercultural understanding need content that is more than mere material for language acquisition. What kind of content, though, is needed to make it educationally significant? In the first part of his paper the author argues in favour of content a) that enables students to make an experience that changes their world views, b) that encourages them to act creatively, and c) that addresses their values and motivates them to reflect on them. In the second and third part of his paper the author refers to a teaching unit on the Civil Rights Movement in the United States that provides such a content. (Verlag, adapt.). |
