| Abstract | "This report is a profile on child labour among girls and draws attention to the international legal framework as it relates to child labour. It identifies the reasons why it is important that the issues facing girls engaged in child labour be urgently addressed. Girls are highly vulnerable as many forms of girls' work is hidden, girls face multiple disadvantages, and have the 'double burden' of having to combine household chores and economic activity, which as a result jeopardizes their schooling. The report provides an analysis of the work of girls and boys in sixteen countries looking both at economic activities and unpaid household services. The observations that emerge are that overall, girls work longer hours than boys, and girls constitute a large proportion of the children engaged in the most dangerous forms of child labour, including forced and bonded labour and prostitution. The report calls for strengthening the knowledge base on issues of child labour among girls and suggests that policy steps include free quality education for all children up to the minimum age of employment."
