Abstract | The main focus of the present thesis is the investigation of the association between working memory and prospective memory performance across old age. Therefore, the first chapter aims at introducing the central concepts prospective memory and working memory. It discusses the present knowledge on the sensitivity of prospective memory and working memory to normal aging processes and presents existing theoretical accounts on age effects in both cognitive constructs. Chapter 1 further considers previous research on the relationship between working memory and prospective memory across adult age. From this theoretical introduction, four specific research questions are extracted regarding objective and subjective prospective memory performance across old age as well as the role of working memory as age-relevant cognitive resource in prospective memory performance. The individual research questions are presented in detail in chapter 2. Subsequently, chapter 3 consists of three empirical studies that refer to the four posed research questions. ... The present thesis closes with a general discussion relating the results of the three empirical studies to the four research questions. (DIPF/Orig.). |
