Abstract"Across Europe there is an increasing consensus that individuals need to become more active in their own social integration process. Participation in Transition focuses on young people's motivation in their transitions from education to work. Through an analysis of case studies the book provides empirical insight into the transition experiences of young people and examines how different types of transition policies affect motivation. The key objective is to examine whether and under what conditions the principle of active participation is effective in re-motivating disengaged young people and argues that mainstream approaches to activation remain ineffective as they neglect young people's subjective realities. The book adopts an innovative interdisciplinary approach that combines discrete research and policy perspectives on the labour market, youth and citizenship as well as learning and motivation. It provides an overview of the prerequisites of motivation in youth transitions and documents the main findings of the study 'Youth Policy and Participation' (YOYO). The study involved nine European countries: Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain and the UK. Based on a qualitative methodology the book provides a typology of participatory approaches in youth and transition policies as well as a typology of different transition patterns, a re-construction of motivational careers of young people, and case studies examples that illustrate the motivational effects of participatory practice on young people's learning biographies. This book is of particular interest to a wide readership including researchers and students interested in young people and to those working within the fields of education, sociology, psychology, economics and community youth work. It may also serve as a useful and accessible reference for policy makers and practitioners in relation to the integration of disadvantaged youth. The study has been carried out in the framework of the European Group for Integrated Social Research (EGRIS)." (author's abstract).
