| Abstract | "In recognizing the need for internationalization, many universities and colleges in the United States are making great efforts to internationalize their institutions in order to prepare their students to live and work in the global society. ... [They] have developed and expanded international activities, study-abroad programs, student and faculty exchange programs, and strengthened international studies within their curricula." Federal government and private foundations give financial support for international area studies. But the effort towards internationalization varies widely between universities. "This study examines different institutional responses to the need for internationalization and the extent of their internationalization efforts." The authors first describe the public arguments in the US for internationalization: 1) International education "has been considered a tool that plays a very effective role in national security and world peace." 2) Internationalization "is essential for the development of global citizenship". 3) Internationalization is important "for the development of global cooperation". The author then analyzes obstacles to the internationalization of higher education and finally reports findings from a study about the types of internationalization efforts of 59 American universities.
