Abstract	"What Europe needs is not just more jobs. The real challenge is to create jobs that offer the prospect of a better life, not only for the scores of Europeans who remain outside of the labour market today but also for those who are trapped in low-paid, dead-end jobs. The need, therefore, is for jobs that offer income security, that are compatible with family life, that bring a degree of life satisfaction and the prospect of upward mobility. This book offers not just insights but also ideas and suggestions. More than 20 authors address a wide range of issues, including the role of training and education, social transfers, minimum wages, care arrangements, the role of consumer demand for services and employer oriented policies. The contributors are members of the EU-funded European Low-wage Employment Research Network (LoWER) which started in 1996 and has since established itself as one of the leading labour market research networks in Europe."
