Abstract | During the 1960s within the framework of the "German Educators Missions" German educators, teachers, school administrators, university professors and lecturers went to the U.S. to visit among others a comprehensive school model "in action". The participants of the study trips, organized by the American Jewish Committee and the Frankfurt based Institute for Social Research led by M. Horkheimer and T. W. Adorno, should experience the every days life of a comprehensive school, its structure, social climate and its attainments as a "preschool of democracy". These (favorable, one hoped) impressions and the comprehensive school model itself acted as "additional meaning" within the discussion about the reform of the German school system of that time. The article focuses on the study trips, its participants and their perceptions of the American comprehensive school and its function in the "externalization period" of a transfer process of (educational) knowledge and structures.
