| Abstract | The paper deals with the link between modern text linguistics on the one hand and two ancient disciplines, the arts of rhetoric and stylistics, on the other hand. After a brief introduction to the communicative-pragmatic approach in text linguistics, the article focusses on the question of which factors are important in the linguistic presentation of (written or spoken) texts. Subsequently, the author points out that the abilities of grammar school students to formulate texts can be improved by ameliorating their speaking skills. How this can be put into practice is illustrated with regard to a public speaking competition that was organized together with students of various Zurich grammar schools. At the end of the paper, the author argues that the teaching of soft skills (such as academic writing, for instance) should play an important role in the students' syllabus at university.
