Abstract | The case explores the study activities of the top 2 per cent of the students in terms of grades on final essay exams in three large introduction courses in psychology at the University of Bergen, in Norway. The findings indicate that the study activities were strongly influenced by the form of assessment. First, the students read the text books and went to lectures in order to get to know the elements of the curriculum and commit the essentials to memory. Secondly, the students reorganized the curriculum into a number of appropriate knowledge objects that served as essay outlines to possible exam questions. Tutored seminar activities and self-organized study-group activities were important for this process. The total study efforts needed for the two processes often exceeded the regulated time for the courses and the retaking of exams in order to improve grades was common. (HoF/text adopted). |
