When planning its reform process, the University of Lüneburg has made a greater effort than most other universities to draw constructive conclusions from the Bologna process. The author, President of the Leuphana University of Lueneburg, uses his article Studying for One's Whole Life: Reflections on and the Future of the Bologna Reform of German Institutes of Higher Education - An Alternative to explain the program with which the university is fundamentally redesigning its study courses in a way that differs from the usual Bologna reform. He presents the concept for an unusual BA study course with a sound base in education theory. This model is outside the mainstream, and represents an attempt to transit the Humboldtian university concept into a suitable form for the 21st century. The frequently overspecialized Bachelor's course is being upgraded with a central education ideal. Tried and tested concepts are being rearranged and combined with new ones. The outcome is a promising concept that makes us want to know more. The model shows how productively the Bologna directives can be implemented. Of course, anybody trying something new cannot expect universal acclaim; otherwise, many others would have done it before. Time will show whether all the components will meet expectations to the same degree. Nonetheless, it is definitely a worthwhile attempt. (HoF/text adopted). |
