(DIPF/Orig.). Cultural diversity not only challenges pedagogical organizations, but also empirical investigations and theoretical concepts related to them. Two different approaches can be differentiated: Whereas the first approach focuses on the culture of an organization, the second conceives culture solely as a construction of the organization which members sometimes use to legitimize their operations. As both approaches tend to focus either solely on the organization or on its culture, a third approach is proffered, which presents a systematic link between culture and organization: The cultures (or milieus respectively) that the members of an organization belong to reach right into the organization itself, being mediated by the 'under-life' of the organization, by practical handling of formal rules and by decisions. Furthermore, new organizational milieus emerge through the practical use of formal rules. Therefore, organizations are confronted with cultural diversity not only from outside, but also carry it within themselves. This insight is of utmost importance to empirical research and evaluation.
