| Abstract | In terms of costs, discussions concerning the higher education sector in Chile have been focused on the yearly increments of registration costs and fees charged in the different undergraduate programs and universities. The debate, charged with important political aspects and their associated emotional factors, overlooks a more profound assessment of both overall and specific trends in the movement of this relative price. The purpose of this article is to fill this vacuum and to provide qualitative and quantitative elements that may help in enhancing the level of the discussion concerning the evolution of fees charged by the different universities in the higher education system. The existence of certain patterns of fees is shown by the analysis. These patterns are the result of the budgetary situation affecting the traditional universities, on the one side, and of both the general conditions of the national economy and the specific structure of the higher education market, on the other.
