| Abstract | [The authors] examine the impact of race, gender, and culture on the professional experiences of black female scholars and administrators in South African institutions of higher education, including both universities and technikons, which have institutional, exclusionary, and prejudice-prone cultures shaped by the interplay of gender and race further reinforced by either their rural or urban locations. Their findings show that the historical under representation of South African women in the higher education sector continues to be perpetuated not in simple terms of access but through indirect tools of exclusion such as unequal opportunities for research, writing for scholarly journals, and presenting papers at professional conferences that constitute the official criteria for recognition. From their analysis and insightful understanding of the lived experiences of the higher-education professional women in the study, they point to the possibilities for creating supportive institutional environments.
