Abstract | Gauthier recently addressed the question of what happens to the energy and momentum carried by counterpropagating waves when they interfere constructively or destructively. He considered electromagnetic waves in a vacuum and linear transverse waves on a stretched string. I point out that his excellent analysis uses a commonly found expression for the longitudinal momentum carried by transverse string waves that is incorrect because it neglects the longitudinal motion of elements of the string, and then indicate what actually happens to longitudinal momentum when such waves interfere. © 2004 American Association of Physics Teachers. |
