Abstract | The study reported here aims to identify factors of education systems as well as cultural and socio-economic factors that are responsible fort he international variation of student performance. It involves a systematic comparison of the school systems of those western industrialised countries that were deemed, on the basis of PISA 200 findings, to be relatively strong compared to the school system in Germany. Furthermore, the main features of the school systems of the reference countries, as identified by the comparative analysis, were brought in contrast to the features of schooling in Germany. Finally, hypotheses are formulated identifying factors with a major impact on student performance and based on findings of the comparative analysis. The reference countries of this project include Canada, England, Finland, France, the Netherlands and Sweden. To support comparability of background information on education systems, England was chosen as the system reference level in the case of the United Kingdom. (DIPF/orig.). |
