Abstract | Although the labour market participation of students has increased substantially in recent years, the unemployment rate of lower-skilled workers in Europe has remained high. To what extent, therefore, do students occupy jobs that are also suitable for lower-skilled unemployed workers? Two separate empirical studies were carried out for the purpose of answering this question, one amongst students in higher education and one amongst employers. The conclusion is that students occupy a substantial numbers of jobs that are, in principle, also suitable for the lower-skilled unemployed, especially in sectors such as retail trade/shops, hotel and catering and industry. This suggests that a substantial displacement process is taking place. The motives employers give for recruiting students instead of lower-skilled persons are mostly related to the students' perceived communication skills and flexibility as well as their ability to learn the job more quickly.
