Abstract | Discusses the significance of symbolic action theory in cultural psychology. The three basic assumptions of cultural psychology as they pertain to definitions of 'culture,' 'individual biography,' and 'future states' are outlined. It is explained that these 3 aspects are the starting points from which human action derives its symbolic qualities. Examples are given of the symbolic meaning of some everyday actions. Various aspects of symbolic action theory are elaborated, concentrating on such concepts as the primacy of consciousness, symbolic variance, and the I-world relationship. (ZPID). |
