Abstract | The article is a part of a "recently completed international project on ' Lifelong learning: the implications for the universities in the EU' whose aim was to identify and analyse the extent and nature of the involvement of European universities in this field. It included policy analyses, the examination of basic statistics and case studies at four universities in each of the seven participating countries." The case study on the United Kingdom "examines the influence of lifelong learning policies upon four universities ... including the Open University. ... It concludes that lifelong learning has not provided a convincing framework for educational developments in universities, even though it figures in policy documents of all those in the study. Its meaning remains contested and initiatives reflecting aspects of lifelong learning have been established piecemal. ... Only in the Open University was it an original ideal. However, the Open University, too, has had to review how far its policies and structures can accomodate all the demands now being made in the name of lifelong learning." (DIPF/orig.) |
