Abstract | The author reviews his experience in promoting the use of information technology in on- campus undergraduate teaching at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, i.e. the "Campus Global" project. This "was conceived initially as an intranet designed exclusively for teaching purposes, but which quickly developed into a facility through which the entire university has access to information applications and services. The experience of teacher resistance, resource difficulties, the vexed issue of intellectual property rights, and the difficulty of providing adequate technological infrastructures, resonates strongly with the experience of similar projects in other universities. At a more fundamental level, however, the author argues that the experience calls into question 'the organisational model of teaching at the university'. He concludes that there is a need for a new 'teaching contract'. He suggests that the primary benefit of the intensive use of these technologies in on-campus education is the opportunity it affords to move to a more holistic and individualised pedagogy, as opposed to the content-based pedagogy of much traditional classroom instruction."
