Abstract | The article identifies three major challenges confronting vocational education and training (VET) in the Central Asian republics of the Former Soviet Union: ... 1) rationalising the network of Professional-Vocational Schools (PTUs) and Specialised Secondary Schools (Technikums), especially given by the decline in VET enrolments; 2) revision of the occupational 'classifier' to reduce the number of specialities as a prerequisite for changes in VET, together with a review of the VET Curriculum Standards; and 3) improving VET funding.
