Abstract | The overview on changes of higher education during the 1990s shows that enrollment quotas, after a period of steadiness, began to grow again around 1990. Notably, more women opted for university education. Employment prospects became more precarious than in preceding decades. Higher education policy and the universities responded to the new challenges among others by a diversification of the admissions system, by the discontinuation of a mandatory period of general education during the first two years of study, by some administrative reforms as well as by various steps towards the internationalization of higher education. Altogether, the author notes indicators of efforts on the part of the Japanese universities to shape their own characteristic institutional profile. (DIPF/orig.). |
