Abstract	This chapter firstly outlines a background against which the motives and purposes of accelerating China's higher educational reform in the 1990s are examined. Then the focus shifts to issues of educational enterprise, commercialisation of knowledge and students as consumers, which constitute the metamorphosis of China's higher education. The chapter suggests that growing market forces, which in the context of China's higher educational reform may be translated as intending to create "economic efficiency", have undermined political control and the old framework of ideology. Finally, the concluding discussion concentrates on the changing values among university students. Through aan analytical comparison between Deng's pragmatic approach to higher educational reform and Mao's thoughts of educational revolution, it argues that the overwhelming emphasis on economic efficiency has virtually changed the definition of the aims and principles of higher education in China.
