| Abstract | The sense of attachment to a social group is an extremely important category while determining both a person's own place in society and his/her picture of his/ herself. Research on the sense of national identity is necessary now. So the research has been carried out in 5 comprehensive schools in north-eastern Poland. 449 Belorussian and Lithuanian pupils participated. The research shows that: comprehensive schools for Belorussian minority are chosen by the young people with a strong sense of Belorussian identity; the differences in the degree of national identity are very important between the Lithuanian young people and Belorussian ones (stronger); Belorussian comprehensive schools prevent strong assimilation, which the pupils attending ordinary schools are subject to; the ethnic primary school is of great importance in building the sense of identity in adolescence; the pupils from the intellectual families living in cities show a much weaker sense of national identity.
