Abstract | Science, like any other sector of the labour market, is reprentative of society at large with all its inequalities and hierarchies in which women still seem to struggle despite official recognition of equality and their academic success as shown by the increase of female university students, graduates and researchers. The objective of this report is to present a woking method to study scientific careers from a gender point of view, a method which tries to exploit available information and acknowledge the importance of the experience accumulated by those who work in scientific and technological fields. Apart from analysing the situation of women in public research institutions, Minerva's Daughters also dealt with some of the basic systems of scientific research such as the appraisal of merit through the analysis of scientific publications; the mechanisms of managerial appointments and political appointments in decision-making bodies; and the academic paths followed by young women and men at university. In addition, the main stereotypes underlying the under-representation of women in scientific research were challenged. Contents: 1. Guidelines for a report on scientific careers from a gender point of view. - 2. University degrees and professional employment of women graduates. - 3. Daughters of lesser god. - 4. Italian women researchers have trouble climbing the career ladder because... . - 5. Which indicators of scientific productivity? - 6. Honours, duties and responsibilities. - 7. Women and men in science: never equal. - 8. Standard comparative tables. (HoF/text adopted). |
