Abstract	"Seit Januar 2001 stehen Frauen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland alle Bereiche der Bundeswehr offen. Der vorliegende Bericht präsentiert die ersten Ergebnisse der unterschiedliche Methoden verwendenden Begleituntersuchung, die das Sozialwissenschaftliche Institut der Bundeswehr (SOWI) im Zusammenhang mit dem Prozess der vollständigen Öffnung der Bundeswehr für Frauen durchführt. Ziele dieser Begleituntersuchung sind die Frage nach Hinweisen auf mögliche Probleme im Integrationsprozess und ggf. die Identifizierung von Bereichen, in denen ein Nachsteuerungsbedarf besteht." "Since January 2001, all the specialties of the Bundeswehr are open to women in Germany. This report represents the results of a study that, by means of different methods, has been done by the Bundeswehr Institute of Social Sciences (SOWI) concerning the process of opening the Bundeswehr completely for women. This study has been aiming at elucidating the question whether there are hints for possible problems in the integration process and, if so, at identifying the specialties, branches or areas showing the need of readjustment measures. The research findings are that in the process of further opening, up to now only a few clues are to be found on the organizational-technical level which point at any immediate need of readjustment measures. Nevertheless, one issue stands out as problematic. Particular problems arise from producing the compatibility of family/ partnership and profession. This area will require particular efforts by the Bundeswehr to become an attractive employer - e.g. by using instruments such as flexibilization of duty hours, a surplus pool of positions making up for absence due to pregnancy and parental leave, institutions of family and children care. There are certain difficulties looming up for the success of the social side of integration. Thus, some examples of tokenism are to be found in the everyday routine: The request of women for equal treatment is being circumvented in practice on the one hand by granting them somehow 'mothering' privileges, and on the other by registering too fastidiously performances and mistakes of servicewomen who, as a rule, are highly motivated. Moreover, some - partly subtle - mechanisms of exclusion were revealed where also sexuality is used as an instrument against women's integration. Thus, it would be too early to pass on to the agenda by marking 'Mission Accomplished'. The very problems will probably emerge only on the middle and long term scale, nearly paradoxically in the course of a 'normalization process'. This points at the necessity of continued efforts in managing the gender relations in the Bundeswehr, of structurally and persistently establishing the gender training within the organization, leading to the suggestion to extend, if possible, the gender training in contents (as for equal opportunity) as well as in duration. This leads to the result that the social integration of servicewomen cannot be considered as accomplished yet. It has to be perceived rather in the sense of a permanent effort. Establishing, maintaining and promoting the social integration of servicewomen - this is a permanent challenge requiring persistent attention." (extract).
