Abstract | This chapter is part of a series of articles first delivered as a joint seminar series organised by the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies and the Department of Educational Studies at the University of Oxford from January to March 2002. It attempts to summarize the following seven contributions by picking out the common points they cover, and to discuss some of their implications for the understanding of the current reform of education in Japan. First the author states a variety of conclusions about the reform process in Japan and tries to explain the reasons for these different view points. He then characterizes the causes which initiated the process of reform. He further states that a homogenisation between Japan and the West is taking place: "It is notable how the rethoric of the reform process in the USA, England and Japan does bear marked similarities." They are the concepts of individuality, creativity, internationalism and liberalisation that appear strikingly frequent. As two main pressure groups for educational reform the author identifies the employers and the parents but each with different intentions. Finally the author points out some of the outcomes of the reform process in Japanese education. (DIPF/Kr.). |
