Abstract | The author looks at the various discourses on "Landeskunde", "Ausländerpädagogik", intercultural learning and intercultural communication in Germany from the perspective of an American working in language teacher training at a German university. In her first chapter she charts the complex and interwoven strands of this lively discussion and provides the reader with an... overview of this field. Her second chapter uses the insights from theory as the basis for an... analysis of several foreign language textbooks claiming adherence to an intercultural agenda. The final chapter presents the rationale, the concrete realisation and thoughtful evaluation of the author's in-service teacher training workshop for interculturally sensitive language training. The book is intercultural both in subject matter and in the way the German discussion is perceived through American eyes. (DIPF/Orig.). |
