Abstract | The Arab countries, especially those in the Gulf, started to modernize later than the other countries and have not adopted a policy of restructuring to the extent that others have. This may be due to their favorable economic situation and the strong cultural foundation of Islam. The chapter describes educational development in four of these countries.... [Conclusion:] The oil-producing Muslim countries had a rapid economic growth until the 1990s. They were able to invest in education and increase the rates of enrollment without drastically restructuring the education system. The poorer Muslim countries have remained dependent on primary-sector production and their rate of enrollment is among the lowest in the world. In all, the Muslim countries have not responded in the same way as many African, Latin American and Asian countries to the global challenges and the increasing educational costs. (DIPF/Orig.). |
