Abstract | China has introduced market forces not only in the economy but also in education. Decentralization has been combined with an encouragement of the growth of private schools. In practice, education is now geared more toward growth and formation of human capital than toward equality and broader development. China's educational policy during the past of two decades is presented [in this article. The authors look at the forces that have moved China in the last 50 years], sometimes through pendulum swings and abrupt policy shifts, from backwardness and deep-rooted tradition to modernity - struggling at the same time to resolve the contradictions netween authoritarianism and democracy, superstition and science, self-sufficiency and interdepencende, among others.
