AbstractOver the last decade, Europe has seen a disturbing rise in racism, xenophobia and social exclusion. The increasing transnationalisation of racist propaganda through media and informal networks has meant that racist movements are becoming increasingly informed about their respective activities and thus strengthened. Overt racism and xenophobia are complemented by more subtle forms of discrimination in the law and in the labour markets. These racist phenomena severely impinge on the principles of human dignitiy, mutual understanding and respect. Foundations active in Europe play a key role in combating the threat racism and xenophobia pose to European democracy. In contrast to the state, foundations can focus much more on holistic solutions to problems. They can experiment with innovative ways of social intervention and give examples to successful strategies. And yet, foundations can act even more effectively if they cooperate with public bodies to form public-private partnerships. ... This publication consists of two major sections: a directory of 99 profiles of funders working in Europe in the fields of inter-cultural relations, racism and xenophobia, and anti-discrimination of ethnic- cultural minorities; and an analysis of the work of several of these foundations with the aim of providing an overview of the work in this area and of identifying cases of good practice. ... The directory focuses on three types of funders: 1. grantmaking or operational European foundations, trusts, and charities having their own fund or regular source of income and their own board of trustees or directors, 2. corporate citizenship programmes active in Europe, 3. intercontinental funders with European programmes or those wishing to develop European programmes or partnerships with European funders in their initiatives. Of the 99 funders in this directory, 88 are European and 11 are American. The 88 European funders represent 30 different European countries with a geographic spread across the northern, western and southern regions of Europe, the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and the Baltic Republics.
