| Abstract | The author explores the situation of homeless children in Russia, drawing on the evidence of a research study that she and her colleagues conducted. Using their results, it is possible to identify a certain exaggeration in the claims of the media and the perceptions of the public with regard to the actual numbers of children on the streets in Moscow. The author's detailed analysis also shows that the causes of the growing vulnerability of children and youth lay not so much in the collapse of the once extensive system of social control over the young, but in the impoverishment and marginalisation of significant sections of the population.
