Abstract | This paper explores the manifestation of business discourses in the governance of education in England. The increasingliy high representation of the private sector in the governing and the managing of education policies is examined here through the operation of the newly set up Education Action Zones (EAZs), that represent a significant shift in the role of the state in education. The paper draws an empirical study on two EAZs and the role of business in the operation of the zones. It is argued that: a) the dominance of the "discourse of business" depends on the distribution of power amongst the different actors involved in the initiative, and, by the capacity of public sector actors to "resist" such a discourse depends on their strategic mobilisation of resource. The two cases studies presented here illustrate the different "outcomes" of such a process of re-defining the social space of education governance, as shaped by different power distribution and resource mobilisation of the public and private actors in two zones.
