Abstract | After reviewing some research on the motivation to become a teacher from the USA, Canada and other developed countries the author presents the results of a survey in Jamaica with 1444 teacher trainees. "This study verified that extrinsic, intrinsic and altruistic considerations were three distinct motivations ... Extrinsic motivation was the most important, accounting for 24,2% of the variation as compared to 14,6% for altruistic motivation and 8,8% for intrinsic motivation. These results, emphasizing extrinsic motivation, are in accord with results reported from developing countries and contrast with the results from metropolitan countries that emphasize intrinsic and altruistic motivations."
