Abstract | The European nation-states were created at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The Blueprints were formulated earlier - in the middle of the eighteenth century - in France and Germany, during which time two different understandings of how nation-states should be created developed. ... What were the original ideas behind these two understandings of the nation-state? What consequences did they have for education? This paper will outline some of the founding ideas of the nation-state and the role that education was given in creating it. Rousseau and Herder had an immense impact on the creation of nation-states in that their ideas focused on education as the main vehicle in the creation of same. The ideas of the two thinkers, one French, one German, whose ideas on the subject were at the opposite ends of the spectrum, will give us the historical tools necessary to understand the role of education in the formation of nation-states.
