Abstract	The authors address the place of the young researcher in the context of the Dutch doctoral system and of higher education research. They formulate a few survival rules for those who wish to pursue a career in higher education research and make some suggestions as to how research training could be organised to transform survival into a rewarding career. First, they place young researchers in the Netherlands in a historical context. Then, they address the specific context of higher education research that young researchers are confronted with. A dilemma regarding career options appears. Finally, they make some suggestions how to deal with this dilemma. (HoF/text adopted).
