Abstract	The expectation of the Australian government has been reported to be that in the foreseeable future the level of funding provided by the government to universities will be 20% with the remaining 80% being enterprise income and public funding. The movement towards this goal has led universities and teachers into some exciting and challenging initiatives which would otherwise have been unlikely to have occurred and thus has positive outcomes. The author gives a variety of examples to illustrate this. Alternatively, these excitements have not been without cost for individuals and the system of education as whole, and finding the balance between traditional scholarship and post traditional enterprise and market culture will continue to pose the greatest threats and challenges teachers and educators will face in the first part of the twenty- first century.
