Abstract | The symposium "Towards a pluralist and tolerant approach to teaching history: a range of sources and new didactics" was organised jointly by the Council of Europe's Council for Cultural Co- operation (CDCC) and the French Community of Belgium. It took place in the framework of the project "Learning and teaching about the history of Europe in the 20th century", and against this backdrop, examined a range of sources, from cinema, television and museums, to state archives and oral history. The richness and divergent points of view that emerged from the lectures and from the round table and working groups discussion fulfilled the symposium's aim of opening doors for exploiting these often untapped sources. They also carried the message that history based upon only one source is suspect and that historical understanding must be derived from a confrontation of sources that often run counter to each other. Only by examining the function of each source, and the different version it tells of the same history can the difficult task of building a history of Europe be undertaken. (DIPF/orig.). |
