AbstractThis report is aimed firstly at presenting the conclusions of all the work accomplished at the symposium, and secondly elucidating a number of educational guidelines likely to optimise the impact of information and communication technologies on history teaching.... The report breaks down into three major sections. The first stresses that these technologies cannot be ignored in history teaching because they have for some time now been an integral part of the socialisation process, they encourage a new relationship with knowledge and they are changing practices in history research itself, thus making it easier to transfer from one research paradigm to another. The second section describes the numerous services that information and communication technologies can provide for history classes, and gives a number of pointers to needs in terms of material resources in the classroom. It goes on to present two teaching situations to illustrate the services in question. The third section lists the pedagogical requirements for integrating such technologies into history teaching. The issue here is the reliability of documentary sources, how to structure learning situations in such a way as to prompt the construction of viable and functional knowledge in the pupils, the educational "force" of interdisciplinary learning situations and their importance in teaching, and the new roles to be played by history teachers in order to facilitate meaningful incorporation of information and communication technologies.
