Abstract | The author reports on the developments of teacher education in Germany and its historical background. The essay is divided into three main sections: Fundamental political alternatives in education in post-war Germany? Labour market developments: flexibility of the education sector - flexibility of the employment system. The counter- movement: governmental attacks on the effectiveness and flexibility of the education system. Doubts are raised by the author, concerning the usefulness of the concept of 'neoliberalist governance of teacher education'.... "On the basis of comparing developments in East and West Germany it is maintained that in a critical perspective the idea of radical political alternatives in education policies in the post-war period is not supported by the facts."
