| Abstract | This paper identifies the kinds of profiles graduates of higher education institutions need to gain in order to fit the requirements of a global job marked.... Higher education institutions are seen to function as intermediaries between the needs of an academically qualified labour force and the requirements of the employer in general and industry in particular.... It also pinpoints the requirements of industry in a changing environment and recommends to universities which steps should be undertaken in response to these changes. It is also shown that higher education institutions are not only in the position to take stock of changing requirements of the job market and react to these changes, but that they also have the capacity to anticipate trends on world markets.
