Abstract | Many countries are composed of highly diversified, pluralistic peoples who cry out for independence and dignity. A growing demand for an egalitarian philosophy has emerged, and school systems around the world have been searching for ways to help egender better interpersonal relations among all persons within their borders. Achieving such goals has proven to be difficult when students have limited cross-cultural experiences.... However, this time, the topic of multicultural education was the central theme since many countries have initiated such programs in an attempt to help young learners acquire more positive attitudes about their countries' pluralistic microcultures, acquire a strong sense of their own self-esteem, identfy examples of stereotypical thinking and prejudice, acquire more enlightened attitudes about gender equity, and articulate understandings about their own microcultures in order to learn how such influences have shaped their own thinking and behavior. The survey results have been augmented by extensive research in order to create a book which provides information about the multicultural efforts around the world.... Each country report includes a brief history of the country "in order to better understand the reasons for the basic structure of a nation's educational system" and describes the types of multicultural education efforts.
